Avoid flying with crying kids
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- A small startup here has produced an app for the iPhone that can identify the seat assignments of children who will be traveling on every U.S. domestic and most international flights. Howard Deveneax, designer of the app for Nomorskreemin, Lld., told Err Travel that the idea for the app came to him earlier this year on a flight between San Francisco and Guadalajara.
Soon after boarding, he discovered that the Airbus A320, with 138 coach seats, was ferrying over 186 passengers. The excess passengers, it turned out, were under the age of three and assigned to ride on an adult's lap during the flight. That assignment lasted until the wheels of the plane lost contact with the runway, at which time, according to Deveneax, "a gang of infants were dislodged in the passenger compartment to run free and create havoc in the airplane."
Upon his return home, Deveneax contacted all major airline reservation system companies. Once he explained his interest, he was granted permission to access their data bases, where he could match passenger list codings to identify the number of juvenile travelers, their ages and their seat assignments. "Once I got access to that information," said Deveneax, "designing an app was easy."
Several Err Travel reporters have used the app when making airline reservations and have found it to be an invaluable tool in identifying flights that are likely to be the most and the least relaxing.
Of course, there is no app available that will foretell if your seatmate will become outrageously drunk.
The app can be downloaded for free from NoMorSkreemin.com.
